Forum Guidelines Reminder

We have seen a small number of threads recently that have drifted into personal criticism rather than intellectual disagreement. A reminder of our core guidelines:

  • Challenge ideas, not people. You can strongly disagree with a position while remaining respectful of the person holding it.
  • No anonymous attacks. If you would not say it in a faculty meeting with your name attached, do not post it here.
  • Academic debate is healthy. Vigorous disagreement that is collegial is exactly what this forum is for.

Moderation actions have been taken on three threads in the past week. We prefer not to lock threads, but we will if necessary.

I have successfully received PMRF (lateral entry, second year). Happy to share what worked in my proposal.

On the research proposal:

  • 60–70% technical approach, 30% context and impact
  • Preliminary results absolutely help. Coursework projects are fine if genuinely relevant
  • The societal impact section should be substantive.PMRF is a national initiative; reviewers want to see why this matters

On citations: Yes, cite your MTech thesis. Framing your PhD as an extension of prior work you did shows continuity of thought.
